April 14 & 17: Notebook quiz & Salton Sea reading

Quiz

Open notebook.

Reading & Analysis

Read the article, highlight, circle and make notes in the margins.

Here’s a list of the main topics to be looking for.  Each of these should be a few sentences, not just a few words!

  • What is the Salton Sea? Where is in?
  • What was it like during the Salton Sea’s heyday?  When was this?
  • Look up “broken windows” theory.  Describe it and how it applies to the Salton Sea’s situation.
  • Why is the Salton Sea dying now?
  • What will be the results of the Salton Sea dying?  How will this impact the surrounding region?
  • What is the state of California planning to do?  Do you think this plan will actually happen?  Why or why not?
  • Make a timeline of the Salton Sea, starting in 1900.  This requires jumping around the article a bit.  Note, this lake started as a dry basin, rather than a lake!
